Managerial Leadership
A Managerial Leader creates and implements procedures and expectations for a safe and fiscally sound environment. They allow a place for open, two-way communication, and can effectively help to resolve conflicts among staff, students, parents and community members. Decisions made on fiscal matters are based on how it promotes and follows the shared vision and goals established and agreed upon all stakeholders, and how it will help improve student achievement and improved instruction.

The instructional coach and I were responsible for helping to create and ensure teachers submitted spreadsheets on time every quarter. If they did not, we would follow up with teachers to ensure we had received the most updated and correct data.

I then worked with the student and parent regarding the incident. I also followed up with teachers to create a plan if needed.

Internship Activities:
  • I attended the Edgecombe County Leadership Academy week at the beginning of the school year. During this week, a team from our school worked with other schools and district personnel in the district to review district data, as well as individual school data. We participated in a process to create a new vision and mission statement for the district. We also worked with our team to begin to create a Strategic Plan (SIT Plan) with SMART goals for our school based on a variety of data sources.
  • I participated in the process of finalizing our Strategic Plan (SIT Plan) with the School Improvement Team. Part of the process included participating in a district review. We met with other schools and reviewed and edited each school's plan. I then attended the board meeting to present our plan to the school board. In the plan we identified resources needed to complete each strategy as well as a way they will be evaluated for effectiveness.
  • Attended, participated and facilitated SIT meetings throughout the year. During the meetings I presented data, as well as participated in the discussions and decision making for the school with the team.
  • I worked with our media coordinator to train our third grade teachers on SuccessMaker, a program the district adopted for remediation for our struggling students. We worked with the teachers to create a plan for implementation, including recreating a laptop checkout process, and a process for students to log in with limited licenses available. I created a video to assist teachers in logging in their students.
  • I was responsible for the implementation of Reading Eggs, an online early literacy/reading program for our Kindergarten and first grade students. I uploaded the student sin the system, trained teachers on how to use, helped teachers create a process for logging students in, monitored usage and assisted with troubleshooting any problems with the program. The program is a resource listed in out Strategic Plan (SIP) to help use meet our Reading proficiency SMART goal.
  • I assisted in updating the staff handbook.
  • I worked with my principal and instructional coach to create a spreadsheet for teachers to record data from multiple sources into one sheet. These sheets are used during PLC’s to discuss student achievement. Teachers compare student preform among multiple programs to look for any alignment and/or misalignment. I worked with the Instructional coach to ensure all teachers turned in sheets and assisted in compiling and printing them for our principal.
  • I had the responsibility of handling disciplines referrals. This included working with students, teachers and parents. I had to have conversations with all three parties and assisted in creating plans of action in an effort to prevent misbehaviors.
  • I worked with the administrative team and the SIT to create a remediation plan for our students performing below grade level based on Read 3D data to help reach the SMART goals in our School Improvement Plan (SIP). I facilitated the remediation tutors, including assisting in the scheduling of groups, getting materials needed to teach the curriculum for remediation, and assisted in managing students enrolled and the communication between the tutors and teachers. I was also responsible for the budget for the plan.
  • I completed 5-minute learning walks, informal observations, and formal evaluations throughout the school year for all grade levels. I provided feedback and conferenced with teachers. Part of these conversations included improvements that may need to be made in classroom management, culture and/or instructional practices.
  • I created and distributed family letters home, as well as created ConnectEd (phone system) for parents.
  • I created video tutorials for both staff and parents for programs we implemented throughout the year.
  • I attended several budget sessions with my principal. These included a beginning of year meeting with finance staff from central office and a meeting with the chief financial officer to discuss the accounts in the budget for the 2013-21014 school year. I also worked on reading through and creating budget for new school year.
  • I attended district trainings on EVASS, bullying, SuccessMaker, and PD360 and then meet with teachers to communicate district expectations and policies for use and implementation.
